Over the past few months I have been able to share a lot about where I'm from and learn lots about my community through food. It has also helped me connect with residents in different ways. Whether it be through having a running joke about the "proper" way to say tomato, some interesting comments on if marshmallows actually belong on mashed sweet potato, or learning about how haggis makes someone feel more connected to home. (vegetarian haggis, neeps, and tatties pictured right)
I mostly started to notice the connections one week when I cooked dinner for the house. I had made fresh gooey snickerdoodle cookies for our pudding that night. At the time I didn't realize it was a very "American" thing to make, but as people started to come up and get some it opened up a conversation about what they were. It was a fantastic moment that I got to share how I love to bake and talk to others about what brings them joy as well.
God shows food throughout the bible as a way to join people together under them. In conjunction its also mentioned to strengthen your soul through feeding it in faith. After that week I started to see this theme come up all around me. I got to talk to people at Soul Food and Bethany about what their faith and beliefs mean to them. It had surprised me that through this connection I started to feel closer to God.
